Global Girlfriend

Stacey Edgar, a social entrepreneur, launched her for-profit venture, “Global Girlfriend,” in 2003 with the sole purpose of helping women around the world who cared for their families with just under one dollar a day. Stacey had a Master’s degree in Social Work and enjoyed helping women and families. One day, when she had run out of the contract work that she was doing, she decided it was time to start her own business.

She remembered that her mother-in-law had once returned from Ethiopia with 10 necklaces made by some women, who were trying to sell hand crafted necklaces to aid workers. It was a market they were trying to reach, but it was not a huge market. After discussions with her mother-in-law and husband, she decided that starting a business to help these women micro entrepreneurs was what she wanted to do. Her husband supported her decision to use the $2000 tax refund check they had just received from the IRS to start Global Girlfriend. Global Girlfriend was launched in Spring 2003 in the basement of her home, from where she would operate for many years

Stacey had to think carefully about how to help these women build a bigger market. She had no prior education or training in business. However, she decided that her enterprise would be a for-profit business rather than a non-profit one. She knew she would have better control if she did not have to depend on the capricious market of donations and grants to sustain her business.

IOnce she had decided what she wanted to do, Stacey Edgar wasted no time. With the help of her mother-in-law, she contacted women cooperatives overseas and imported merchandise from them. She invited her friends and acquaintances to a party at her house and was pleased to see that her friends loved the merchandise. The party was a huge success! The concept of Global Girlfriend blossomed and so did her business. Initially, she received help from friends who volunteered their time. As her monthly sales grew, she hired them to assist her in the business. Monthly sales revenue increased from $770 in January 2005 to approximately $25,000 in June 2007, as shown in Exhibit 1.......
